What is Enteral Therapy?
Enteral nutrition or tube feeding is a way of providing nutritional support via the GI tract. Suitable for those who are unable to meet nutrient requirements orally. The GI tract is composed of the mouth, esophagus, stomach, and intestines.
Enteral feeding may mean nutrition taken through the mouth or through a tube that goes directly to the stomach or small intestine. Enteral therapy is the preferred route of nutritional support when feasible. It is safer, more cost-effective, more physiologic, and maintains gut function and integrity in comparison to Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN).
A person on enteral therapy usually has a condition or injury that prevents eating a regular diet by mouth, but their GI tract is still able to function.
Being fed through a tube allows them to receive nutrition and keep their GI tract working. Enteral feeding may make up their entire caloric intake or may be used as a supplement.
Types of Feeding Tubes
NASOGASTRIC (OR NG TUBE)
The feeding tube passes through the nose, down the throat, and esophagus and ends in the stomach.
NASOINTESTINAL (OR NI TUBE)
The feeding tube passes through the nose, throat and esophagus, continues through the stomach, and ends in the first section of the small intestine.
GASTROSTOMY (OR G TUBE)
The feeding tube is inserted directly into the stomach.
JEJUNOSTOMY (OR J TUBE)
The feeding tube is surgically inserted into the jejunum, the middle section of the small intestine.
